1. Lectio (Reading Scripture)
Actively read the text slowly, repeatedly, and aloud if possible. Pay attention to a certain word or phrase that grabs your attention during your reading.
2. Meditatio (Meditate on Scripture)
The key to meditatio is to take your time. In this step you are simply receiving the word or phrase; do not rush to the next step or rush to figure out why that particular word stood out. Mull over that word or phrase, asking yourself what the word is causing you to feel or to think.
3. Oratio (Prayer)
Through prayer, ask God to illumine your mind and heart. Is there something you are trying to tell me or teach me today? Lord, what do you want me to do with the word you’ve given me today?
4. Contemplatio (Restful peace and trust)
Remain quiet and rest in God’s love. Express gratitude for the ways He led you through the reading of His Word. As a way to wrap up your time spent in lectio divina, write down what you heard from God.
